Amrita’s Dr. Subramania Iyer was recently invited to several distinguished forums and conferences around the world to share details of the pioneering work he is leading at Amrita.
March this year, Dr. Iyer was in Moscow, as part of the
steering committee of the Eurasian Summit on Oncology.
Here he was nominated as program chairman for the forthcoming Eurasian Conference of Head and Neck Oncology to be convened in Almatty, Kazakhsthan in May 2011.
“This is a trilingual meeting that is held once in two years for head and neck oncologists from Australasia, member countries of the former Soviet Union, Asia and Europe,” stated Dr Iyer.
The conference provides a platform for head and neck cancer specialists from the different countries to interact and learn from each other about high-quality specialized treatments of head and neck cancers.
An expert in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers and a specialist in the field of Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Subramania Iyer leads the Division of Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Head and Neck Oncology at Amrita.
In May, Dr. Iyer traveled to Perth to attend the 79th annual meeting of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) as a distinguished overseas visitor.
Formed in 1927, RACS is an institution that focuses on training surgeons and setting standards for surgical practice. At their annual meeting, Dr. Iyer spoke about a new technique of orbitomaxillary reconstruction developed at Amrita.
Dr. Iyer delivered two keynote address and three guest lectures, where he spoke about several other topics as well.
In June, Dr. Iyer was part of the Amrita delegation that traveled to Seoul, Korea to participate in the international meeting of IFHNOS (International Federation of Head and Neck Oncology Societies).
“There were 10 presentations from Amrita at the conference,” remarked Dr. Iyer. “This represented the largest number of presentations from a single institution from among all institutions from the 57 countries that participated.”
India was formally represented at the conference by the Foundation for Head and Neck Oncology; Dr. Subramania Iyer had served as its president.
Later, in August this year, Dr. Iyer will travel to China to deliver an invited talk at the UICC World Cancer Summit.
Organized to help implement the World Cancer Declaration, the summit will work to bring the growing cancer crisis to the attention of government leaders and health policymakers in order to significantly reduce the global cancer burden by 2020.
Dr. Iyer, who joined Amrita in 2003, obtained an MCh in Plastic Surgery from Medical College, Calicut and an FRCS from Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburg. We wish him all the best as he takes his work to all these distinguished forums overseas.
